My parents have a wood-burning fireplace in their living room. Growing up, I spent many evenings watching a movie with the family while a fire blazed. As the weather turns cold, we’re focusing on those things that help make a home warm and cozy. Starting on page 34, two experts give us insight on fireplaces. Homeowner Shelley Cords-Swanson featured on page 22 inspires us. She did all the masonry work surrounding her home’s fireplace. By selecting and placing every stone she created a beautiful focal point in her living room.
While there’s something comforting in having a fire in the fireplace, there are other elements in the home that can warm things up. On page 17, we meet a woman who adds a textured look to rooms with the faux finish painting technique. With faux finish, even an accent wall can transform a room. Matt Anderson shares his expertise in Conquering Clutter, on page 42 and gives advice for easy ways to tackle cleaning and organization projects in the home.
