Women and Travel

From the Editor
Natalie S. Knudsen

The past year since becoming editor of Womeninc has been filled with great women, wonderful stories, and more than a couple of panic attacks as I discovered the challenges of putting together the quality magazine that women – and men – look forward to six times a year.
The women whose stories we feature continue to amaze and inspire me not only with their energy but also with their courage and strength. The Difference is You awards sponsored by Hawkins Chevrolet and Womeninc recognizes these women. I urge you to take time to meet them on page 40.
If your life has “gone to the dogs” this summer, now is the time to turn over a new leaf. Maureen and Kristy of Me and My Master Canine Connection can help you do just that with grooming, obedience, and day care for your special friend.
We’ve finally settled into our new routines for fall and winter is just around the corner but before the snow flies, it’s a great time for a day trip and maybe some shopping. Yes, it’s true, the Christmas decorations are out in full force already. Take a trip with us to the Historic Dayton House for an afternoon of relaxation, pamper yourself with a makeover – and perhaps a little “me” time, or start your holiday shopping and benefit women in Third World countries at a unique “free trade” gift store.
All of us agree that family is important, especially at Thanksgiving when we all gather around the table to share our blessings, but it’s easy to forget the importance of family time between work, school, and activities. Dr. Parnell’s column reminds us not to over schedule and the importance of letting “kids be kids.” I recently read an article in a national women’s magazine urging parents to schedule a family dinner at least twice a week. When I read the article I thought they were just targeting those career folks in the “cities” until my son came home from school and reported that a survey in one of his high school classes showed only about ten percent of the class sat down with at least one parent even once a week for a meal. Family dinners are a priority at our house and I hope they are at yours too – it’s a great time for everyone to share the ups and downs of their day.
With our days at the lake and time in the garden winding down, we adopt a new pace. I don’t think anyone anywhere can keep up the pace we set as we try to cram all the fun and sun into our short summer months. Now that tang of fall is in the air, I plan to take time to read a good book, gather my family around the table, and enjoy our favorite comfort foods. I hope you will too.
